Ginseng Tips

Ginseng Can Be Used To:
  • Cope With Stress
It is common knowledge that the stress and strain of everyday life can be blamed for any number of health-related problems and illnesses. As an adaptogen, ginseng works on the entire body, helping it restore normal function. It can be considered "...one of the most valuable herbs to understand and use, particularly for its ability to help our bodies cope with stress and fatigue." (Mark Cullen and Carol Wiley, "Getting To The Root Of Ginseng," Vegetarian Times Magazine, September, 1989, page 47.)

  • Increase Performance
Many studies have shown that ginseng is valuable in enhancing physical performance, endurance, and coordination. Research has shown that it improves performance in reaction tests, increases oxygen uptake and lung function, and reduces the muscle fatigue and recovery times of athletes. (Christopher Hobbs, "Ginseng," Herbs For Health, March/April 1997, page 36.)

  • Reduce Fatigue
Ginseng has been shown to be a safe, effective, and natural stimulant that is ideally suited for use when one is exhausted from overwork, insomnia, or over-indulgence. It may also be taken to reduce fatigue associated with diseases such as anemia and dysentery. (A Ginseng Primer written by the Ginseng Research Institute for the Ginseng Board of Wisconsin, Inc., 1998, page 5, sections A & B.)

  • Promote Brain Fuction
In a 1982 study, 45 patients suffering from a lack of blood flow to the brain showed a 34% improvement after taking ginseng. ("Ginseng," Herbs For Health, March/April 1997, page 37.)

Animal studies and human use indicate that ginseng increses the ability to learn, improves memory and concentration, and is effective for insomnia and certain types of depression. (Robert I. Lin, Ph.D., "Ginseng And Herbs, An Insider's Story," Total Health, October, 1987, pages 35-36.)

  • Fight Disease
    • Immune System: Researchers at the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Jilin Province found that mice injected with foreign blood cells experienced a significant increase in antibody levels when they had been pretreated with daily doses of ginseng for five to ten days before testing. (Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., "Ginseng. The Excitement Grows," Bestways Magazine, December, 1987, page 45.)

    • Cancer: In 1995, a study of 1,987 pairs of volunteers concluded that ginseng lowers the risk of lip, oral pharyngeal, esophageal, stomach, colorectal, liver, pancreatic, laryngeal, lung, and ovarian cancer. ("Ginseng," Herbs For Health, March/April 1997, page 37.)

    • Diabetes: An overview of ginseng chemistry and pharmacology produced by the College of Pharmacy, University of Minnesota, reported that ginseng increased carbohydrate metabolism and lipid synthesis. It was suggested that ginseng promotes the conversion of sugars to lipids and decreases high blood sugar levels in diabetic animals. (Dr. E. John Staba and Shiow-Edith Chen, College of Pharmacy, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, An Overview of Ginseng Chemistry, Pharmacology and Anti-Tumor Effects, page 95.)

    • Heart Disease: A 1994 study of patients recovering from open heart surgery showed that those given ginsenosides had a faster recovery rate and experienced less tissue damage than patients who did not take ginsenosides. (Ginseng," Herbs For Health, March/April 1997, page 37.)

    • Ginseng may also reduce the potential for coronary artery disease by lowering the risk ratio of high deensity lipoprotein cholesterol/total cholesterol. (Fred H. Schultz, Jr., Robert Lowe, and Richard W. Woodley, West Terre Haute, IN, The Possible Effect Of Ginseng On Serum HDL Cholesterol And Herpes Simplex.)

    • Patients with disorders of the cardiovascular system can safely take SUPERIOR ginseng on a regular basis, but should do so with the full knowledge and consent of their doctors. (A Ginseng Primer, page 6, section E.)

  • Decrease The Effects Of Menopause
Ginseng improves the regulation of hormones, thereby making it beneficial in treating the detrimental effects of menopause. (lbid, page 6, section E.)

  • Increase Longevity
"Scientific research with older people has confirmed that ginseng can produce increased vitality during aging." (Dr. Stephen Fulder, Doctor of Pharmacology and Gerontologist, An End to Aging - Remedies For Life Extension, Destiny Books, N.Y.C., 1983, pages 39-74.)

It is reputed by the Chinese to invigorate and prolong life. (Maureen Licata meardon, "Ginseng Is Food For Thought," The Canadian Journal of Health And Nutrition, Novermber, 1993.)
